From crow's nest to bow fort

You don't always have to follow the assembly instructions that come with...

Since we have a cog in our assortment and with this type of ship you can often see so-called bow forts, I show here how you can easily build such a fort yourself.

You need that

Laser Cut Kit 6079181
Some wooden stirring sticks
Craft knife or scalpel
Geo triangle
The delivery form
To build a bow fort, I use the "Ship Accessories" kit, more precisely the square crow's nest it contains.
The side walls
I separate the four side walls from the frame with the scalpel and remove the remains of the bars with sandpaper. There are two shorter and two longer sidewalls. I take one of the short ones and separate out the middle board. The webs should remain on the two outer parts if possible.
Extend side walls
The two longer side walls of the original crow's nest are now extended with the two parts just obtained from the cut narrow side wall.
Since the bars on these two parts were retained, the extension fits seamlessly into the look.
I get more stability if I immediately glue on the corresponding "boards" with the nail engravings, as also described in the crow's nest instructions.
The remaining narrow side wall can also be fitted with these strips.
The fort floor
I can't use the square floor of the crow's nest for the bow fort, since it is trapezoidal.
Therefore, I take a piece of cardboard and draw myself a floor with the help of the side walls and a geo-triangle.
Here, the angles should of course fit the bow of the ship!
The floor is planked
I find a few wooden stir sticks and cut them into the required length.
A few guide lines on the cardboard floor are of course helpful, so that the planks can be laid neatly.
Grind and embellish
I don't need to go to the trouble of cutting the wood correctly around the edge beforehand, because I can simply turn the base over after it has dried and the cardboard provides a great guide for the craft knife.
It is always a good idea to sand any cut edges.
At the later entrance, I still attach a cross-threshold, because I find that quite pretty.
The remaining crossbars
I glue the side walls of the bow fort to my self-built floor and now attach the remaining crossbars with the nail engravings.
These parts are available in different lengths, as already mentioned, and it's a good idea to take a quick look at the crow's nest building instructions if you're not sure which length to glue where.
But "trial and error" does the trick.
The three crossbars, which were intended for the cut side wall of the crow's nest, I now also cut in pieces to be able to glue my extended side walls.
If you like, you can of course fill and sand the small joints in the extended crossbars before painting.
One last tip!
I rarely throw away the wooden frames left over from laser-cut kits, because there are often quite interesting shapes laser-cut that I like to use for building my own models.
So here I cut a finishing edge out of the frame and I'm done with my bow fort!

If I have a bowsprit on my ship that protrudes through the fort, I must of course build my bottom accordingly and leave a hole.
